TALL OAKS LODGE — WHAT'S NEARBY
| There is a good selection of pretty much everything you might need in Nellysford, just down the road from the Stoney Creek gate. Everything is on the same road (VA 151), so nothing is very hard to find. The Nellysford Area Merchants Association publishes a brochure listing the businesses, their addresses, phone numbers, and hours of service and provides a map showing their locations. We include a copy of this brochure with our key package and also keep a copy in our information binder at the house. The following paragraphs highlight some of the more important businesses. | ||||
| The Valley Green Shopping
Center is a small strip-mall containing a number of stores, including
gift and craft shops. The Center includes a small super market
(Blue Ridge Grocery) and a great Italian deli
(Chorio's) next door (try the hot Italian sub) that
features Hershey's ice cream. The deli delivers to the resort (requires
minimum order)...see their menu in the binder at the house. After
you've viewed all the videos at the house, you can rent more at the
Valley Video store near the Grocery. They also have a
great "used book" selection at great discount prices. There
is a State liquor store in the mall, selling beer, wine, and liquor. The
Thai-Mex II offers an interesting and tasty menu. Guiseppe's Italian Ristorante, across the street from the strip mall, offers a variety of Italian favorites, including specialty pizzas and traditional pastas.
| A little further South on 151 is Basic Necessities. It sells
great bread and other things, has an extensive wine selection (at a wide
range of prices) and serves up great lunches and dinners in their
limited space. (call for reservations to ensure a table) This
shopping area is also home to the Blue Ridge Pig, a
funky barbeque "restaurant" (I put it in quotes because
it only seats a few people at a time). The pork is pretty good.
Ambrosia, next to the "Pig," is a gourmet
bakery featuring pastries and sandwiches. Next to Ambrosia is the
Wintergreen Market, a specialties food store with a good
beer, wine and cheese selection. The True Value Hardware store is on the other side of Basic Necessities and features a wide variety of household and building supplies.
| Ashleys Market, about 2 miles north of Stoney Creek on route 151, offers decent prices on gasoline and basic grocery needs. They also prepare home made hot lunches, specializing in really tasty southern fried chicken, various side dishes, and scrumptious (there's no other way to describe them) fruit cobblers. Just a little further North is Paulies Pig Out, home-smoked beef and pork. | ||||
| At the Mountain Resort, the Black Rock Market sells basic groceries and sundries and has a modest wine selection. They also rent videos. The Market makes tasty deli sandwiches and pizza, and is near the Mountain Inn. | ||||
| There are also 5 restaurants in the Resort,
each one somewhat different in tone from the other. The best information
(menus, too) about them is at:
Wintergreen Dining. We've had great food at each of the three
mountain restaurants (the Edge, Devils Grill, & Copper
Mine) and the Stoney Creek Grill in the
valley. You should check out The Blue Toad Pub, about 5 miles north of Nellysford on VA 151. Soft ice cream, pub food and microbrews. Cocina del Sol on US 240 in Crozet has authentic Mexican food and the best margueritas we have tasted. We also recommend the Three Notch'd Grill, also in Crozet, for fine dining at reasonable prices. And don't miss the superb pizza at Crozet Pizza.
If you visit between May and October, don't miss the
Nelson County Farmer's Market, every Saturday from 8a - 12n,
located on VA 151 at the entrance to Stoney Creek. If you're visiting Charlottesville, there is also a large
City Market
located at Water and South Streets, near the Downtown Mall.

A number of local wineries feature tours, wine
tastings, and special events. We have provided phone numbers, links, and
directions on our Nearby Vineyards page.
The Blue Mountain
Brewery, on route 151 just south of US 250, features beers and ales
brewed with locally grown hops. Check their website for visiting (and
tasting) hours and the current food-service menu. The
Devil's Backbone Brewing Company,
south on route 151 a few miles, features their own draft brews, including
nonalcoholic root beer and ginger beer, and an extensive menu. Styled as a
mountain lodge, DBBC also offers nightly live musical entertainment. | In addition to
activities at the resort, there are many things to do and places to go
in Nelson County and the Charlottesville area.
The monthlyNelson County
Life provides up-to-date information on local activities. Check
their respective web pages for details. Click your browser's "BACK"
button to return to this page. | If you just can't leave the world
behind, the Richmond, Charlottesville, and Washington newspapers are
available at the Black Rock Market and the Valley Green Shopping Center
(but the Washington Post costs twice as much in the valley).
